    What happened to all the colorful textures in 2.x?

    DreamZZT's renderer was updated to be as fast and accurate as possible. The downside to this is that JPEG images can't be displayed underneath the text anymore. I did add a few extra effects where appropriate, though, such as the sparkeling water effect.
