Has anyone else experienced problems with the file loader? Specifically, if I so much as touch the joypad the game tends to refuse to load, often refusing to even let me type in the name at that point--all my keypresses are immediately erased. This also keeps me from swapping CDs.
Kinda looks like FrotzDC development may have died, but I'd love to see a slightly more usable version make it out...

Is this when selecting a game initially, or when loading / saving in the middle of a game? There are a lot of problems with the file selector during load / save, but i thought it was working ok for selecting a game. What part of the controller are you touching? If you press on the d-pad, it will scroll through the list of files, causing anything you typed to be erased. Would it be better if you could only scroll the box using the keyboard?
Also, there is an updated 1ST_READ.BIN on the site that removes the file selector for loading and saving games, which will also help you out. I haven't really had time to work on the bugs on the file selector yet, as i've been busy with other projects and school. I'll try to get a fix out soon.

Starting initially, I'm afraid.

If one could do it entirely with the keyboard--including using the Tab key to get down to the buttons for reloading the CD and such--that would seem to solve the problem, yes.
And the problem isn't that moving the D-pad erases what I typed. It's like this:
Let's say the prompt says "Zork_1.z5" or whatever. If I type a backspace, it quickly erases, then redraws, the 5. If I type an "a", it quickly draws, then erases, the a.

Unfortunately I seem to be basically incompetent at using anything but SBIs. :) My experiments with self-encoding binaries and using the DCHakker/Demo Menu tools have all gone very badly.

Okay. I grabbed the new 1st_read.bin and did build a bootable image with it. The thing is... I realize now that the current SBI DOES use this version since that doesn't have the file requester for load/save either. So this is the exact same program, and I'm still getting the exact same result: can load if I use the keyboard ONLY, but using keyboard ONLY prohibits me from refreshing the CD drive, which means I can ONLY play games off of a disc I've preloaded with the z-code games.
This really is a very cool undertaking and I love the choices you gave us for colors (it's eerie seeing a 64 screen in 80 columns!), that's why I'm hoping to get it working right. I suppose it's not the end of the world to have to preload a disc with all the games now that I know what the trick is, but I thought you'd like to know...

I'll try to work on this in a week or so. Right now I don't have Dreamcast development stuff set up in the new apartment, and I've been really busy with other things. At least it works with the games burned on the SBI disk, so you can still get your fill of interactive fiction for now :)

I'm having the same problem with the 1.0 version. If I so much as touch any button on the controller then I cannot load a game even with the keyboard. I have to do everything with the keyboard from the moment FrotzDC is loaded, touching the controller really seems to mess it up.
It would be really nice to have this fixed and make it possible to use the controller and even better if a virtual keyboard were to be added as I'm not always at a DC with a keyboard. To be able to play these games on any DC even without a keyboard even if it is more cumbersome is better than not playing them at all if you don't have access to a keyboard.
